If you google "open-air prison", 90% of the results are about this, and almost nothing about Gaza :agony-deep:

Search engine optimization. It's where you use keywords to get your results near the top of certain search engine results, trying to keep in mind the algo used to sort results. In this case (and I think this is intentional) the US government used the language that is normally used to describe the Occupied Territories by pro-Palestine activists about Xinjiang province. The idea is that since it is an official statement by the US government, it would be published in most "reputable" news outlets (which are preferred by search engines now). This means if anyone tries to find out what an "open-air prison" is, say because it is talked about on social media, they'll get stories about Xinjiang rather than Palestine.

Yeah it's not that different as a search algorithm. It still puts this US State Department shit on top for the same reason it puts random forum posts and mommy blogs at the bottom. It can't really do nuance any better than this.

I looked into it assuming that Google had some sort of agreement with the State Department to push narratives. Maybe it is just plain old algorithm manipulation.

        Really does look that way.

It's like they just co-opted the language to subvert search queries about the current apartheid/genocide in Palestine.

That's the power of a US dominated internet. The GFW was pretty :galaxy-brain: on PRC's part.

Does this mean the US is going to send military support to China now?

When China starts launching air strikes on hospitals and clinics in Xinjiang and builds a wall to keep the undesirables out then I consider it an open air prison much like the Gaza Strip.

oh man if only there was a way to see how life is in that open air prison as an average person. You know like open and free tourism numbering to tens of millions of visitors per year...

Like what is the logic of them going for this particular metaphor yesterday? Are they really trying to game the SEO or something?

I would if I spoke a word of mandarin. Or had the time/money to do so. Or people to go with.

I think you can hire local guides who speak 3 languages like Daniel Dumbrill did in his videos on XJ.

I've been doing Duo Lingo on and off for years, but I really need someone to practice with.

If nothing else, time in Xianjiang would give me a ton of practice.

I theoretically would, if I had the money, a medium-sized group I could trust going with, and the time to do it.

I'd go a lot of places if I had those things. Xinjiang would be an interesting one though.

I eman yeah, but I would really like to be able to say yes when libs are like "uhhhh, have you ackshually been there? then listen to this reporter who hasn't been there either." I would have first person knowledge and memories, so they would have to call me a bot instead.

"an open air prison". Perhaps a little too much like the USA..they don't want a potential copycat.
