"Contributing to society" ≠ Doing things that actually makes the world a better place.

"Contributing to society" = Perpetrating capitalism. The size of your contribution is measured by the amount of money you get for your troubles.

Why should any man, woman, or child suffer for food, clothing, or shelter? Why? The question cannot be answered. Don't tell me that some men are too lazy to work. Suppose they are too lazy to work, what do you think of a social system that produces men too lazy to work? if a man is too lazy to work, don't treat him with contempt. Don't treat him with scorn as if you were a superior being. If there is a man who is too lazy to work, there is something the matter with him. He wasn't born right or he was perverted in this system. You could not, if you tried, keep a normal man inactive, and if you did he would go stark mad.

People aren't anti-work because they're lazy and don't want to contribute. In fact, I'd argue most anti-work people want desperately to contribute to society, but they are forced into miserable roles that chew them up and spit them out, or they end up doing "bullshit jobs" in order to get a steady paycheck and reasonable benefits and paid time off.

If OP is so alarmed at people not wanting to work, he should be asking what's wrong with work.

        trying to survive

This is what drives me fucking insane, with all the wealth and technology we have today

why the fuck do I need to survive like I'm some fucking caveman?

Yes everyone should work and contribute to society, but there is NO fucking reason why every single person shouldn't have their baseline needs met with the amount of food, clothing, etc. we produce EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY

there's so much fucking clothes they throw that shit away! there's landfills full of the shit in Ghana!!!

There's so much fucking food we throw tons of it out at every place I've ever worked!

        What the FUCK!

its such a blatantly irrational way to organize society. Can someone explain to me WHY we can't have everyone be fed and housed from a centrist/right wing angle?

I'm not asking for 1950's American settler lifestyle for all

Like literally you should be able to have a job, any FUCKING job, doing literally ANYTHING contributing to society and not have to worry about starving. You won't be some pampered glutton, but you shouldn't fucking die.

I honestly think it's on purpose. As long as the population is too busy trying to survive they don't have the time or energy to fight against the oppression that's keeping them impoverished.

Turn on the news right now, they're telling you why for free. The reason is "if people have their basic needs met, no one will want to do crappy jobs that we need like burger flipper, truck driver, shelf stocker, etc." They literally feel entitled to you laboring under whatever conditions work best for them, and they will torture you to get it done if you won't sign up voluntarily.

Like /r/collapse it's a good place for a Pedagogy of the Oppressed Marxist-humanist approach. An oppressed group that sees its oppression but without a coherent critique of it, posts that directly confront them with the dehumanisation they face from their oppressors, a tangible goal toward liberation in the form of wage/benefit increases and a tangible path with the union drive and strikes. We can link the pandemic, shortages, productive relationships, and labour history together to answer the five W's.

Things need to be done for society to happen, but currently a lot of jobs just exist because liberals can't justify giving people money if they don't work for it, rather than because they actually fill a need. 40 hours a week is also a totally arbitrary number.

I don't disagree with you. Work as in humans doing labor is necessary, work as in like 9-5, careers and shit is arbitrary and benefits the bourgeoisie. Some people also do not create value with their job, like investors or cops

I have a coworker who worked up to 16-hour days at his last job, did a lot of overtime off the clock (for free), said it was worthwhile because they "treated him right" (let him take off a day for a death in the family) and over the 5 years he worked there he put over $100k in his 401(k).

We are blue-collar workers making well under $20 an hour.

It's always amazing how the right gets VERY collectivistic when workers say "no" to being exploited, or LGBT people just want to not get executed by the state.

"You see, these people HAVE to suffer for the good of society!"

"Wait, are you an environmentalist!? Oh? so you think rich people should just go without for the good of society!?"

Is antiwork at risk of getting banned? I don't fuck with :reddit-logo: anymore

I don't think it is, antiwork is more just people complaining about modern work from a leftist perspective, I'm pretty sure the "reason" chapo got banned was a lot of :john-brown: posting and similar "calls to violence". Could be wrong tho

          • NaturalsNotInIt [any]
            ·

Chapo was banned because it had a high profile and made Reddit look bad. The "minecraft slave owners" thing was just an excuse, like the feds busting Al Capone for tax evasion. The target was on the sub's back a long time before that for being too loud, interfering with other subs, the association with the Cumtown subreddit (which also had a lot of "issues" for the reddit staff), and the Atlantic Council cracking down on the fun.

Antiwork has a much longer history as a subreddit and the culture is more typically "reddit" whereas the old CTH subreddit was something special, not quite like the rest of the site.

I doubt it, but I can see it on a similar trajectory of getting bigger and then diluting further and liberalizing more. As it stands though I skim through threads there and see lots of people with anarchist and communist flags.

They would ban it if they could find a reason, but there is none. It is (was) explicitly leftist when I joined it around 10k subs, but it´s not about explicit violence, talk about revolution or historical events. It´s about how shitty the workplace and the economic system is. It´s a very pro-union rather then pro eat the rich kind of deal. With the subs leadership being anarchist I have some hope that it goes more towards IWW type of union advocacy instead of a lib one.
