YouTube has gotten more annoying for creators and less profitable, so some of the ones with enough in the bank are dipping out?
I only watched Tom Scott's because he is/was actualy decent and basicaly its the same thing you probably already know, over the years when you're successful it becomes a full time job with no benefits no vacation and an absurd requirement for a regular uninterrupted schedule. You end up sacrificing everything, your body, your mind and even your family.
Eventualy as we know either you sell out and put your face behind someone's editing and script turning your channel into a "business" or you scale down/retire. He chooses to take a break but I am confident it is likely retirement from at least that sort of regularly scheduled content.
I don't think it is necessarily about profitability, if anything some niches are paying better than ever but obviously it is very top side heavy and a small channel can barely afford minimum wage while these celebrities are richer than ever.
Eventualy as we know either you sell out and put your face behind someone's editing and script turning your channel into a "business" or you scale down/retire.
Matt Pat is doing the former and trying to disguise it as the latter
It's the smart move from his perspective. Imagine spending the next ten years of your life with everyone calling you the "zoomer avgn" because you read other people's scripts - no thanks!
He's really not. It's clear he's out of the cockpit, and he has no involvement at this point. He made a company and developed a solid formula for video making, carved a nice niche. Why close down the business when he could just leave? Anything that happens at this point doesn't reflect on him, unlike AVGN who was still reading the scripts and claiming the content.
Eventualy as we know either you sell out and put your face behind someone's editing and script turning your channel into a "business" or you scale down/retire.
AVGN lol. I know he has a family but damn it must be soul sucking to see your creation reduced to a shit load of fuck
Yeah I watch a medium sized game of thrones symbolism channel (100k subs) and the creator is about to quit too because of how much he gets jerked around. Videos constantly getting pre-reviewed and approved, then flagged and de-monitized, then re-monetized after the algorithm has tossed it aside
Can SmarterEveryDay dip too please? That Destin guy used to make weapons for the military. Do not like him one bit.
I generally dislike basically everybody in the "Youtube Smart Person Who Tells You Information For 10-30 Minutes" sphere for various reasons (Tom Scott and 3Blue1Brown are the least aggravating for me as they're pretty good at staying in their lane), but by far the funniest (and most aggravating) part of their whole project is when they get onto China or the USSR in the middle of a video that doesn't immediately seem like it would be about that, and it just turns into a whole spiel like: "The totalitarian regime of China/USSR is well-known for their extensive censorship and the iron hand they have on the media, with many human rights abuses. According to recent estimates, the gulag system murdered 50 quintillion people under Stalin's terror alone, and not a single person was allowed to speak their mind. If you were the first to stop clapping during a Stalin speech, you would be executed. Anyway, as I was saying, this new flavour of ice cream was invented in the USSR in 1976..."
Like, wow, you're really doing a great job with that Bill Gates grant money.
Kurzgesagt has to be the worst one, especially their "We'll totally fix climate change, guys!" video. They're also literally funded by Bill Gates.
protip: it's only whataboutism if you're mentioning bad things the USA does.
Tom Scott
neoliberal NPC who thinks 'rich people should build more nice fountains, wow!"
you're really doing a great job with that Bill Gates grant money.

a celebrity is “only” an A- or B-lister, until they are inspired to put aside childish things, as Obama said during his inauguration, quoting scripture. This celebrity then throws themselves into the world of humanitarian-branded, progressive-looking activism, generally three-letter State Department-connected NGOs which have been described more accurately as “the human rights-imperialism racket.” This celebrity then transcends mere stardom and becomes someone to whom we should look for not only entertainment, but moral and political guidance.
every neoliberal micro-celeb is a wannabee imperialist propagandist
tbh I agree with Tom Scott on that video to the degree that Jeff Bezos unveiling a big vanity art project completely free and open to the public would be a slightly better use of his money than launching his own ass into space
Rich people should build more fountains though. That's a statement that doesn't even contradict the idea that rich people shouldn't exist. They do, and they should be building fountains until we eliminate them. I would also say it's not even liberal especially, but definitely not neo liberal. Throughout human history, where there are wealthy people they are financing public works and art to show off their wealth. They make gardens and parks and statues and temples to raise their prestige, as well as support something they like. Part of the reason most American cities look like shit is because all space was either administered by the government with the lowest possible budget and any spending that wasn't functionally essential(and quite a lot that was) got treated as a sin, or it was used by businesses. Vanity projects should be theater companies and artworks, not space flights and warehouses full of cars.
Honestly? Marginally better. Oil and gas aren't being wasted on them and more people can enjoy them.
Even if we somehow moved to a transit-centric world, that history ought to still be there, like going to look at old WW2 fighter planes.
It's impressive the opportunities for any media to devolve into that sort of propaganda. I was reading about micro-studios around the world on some totally innocuous seeming home decor site. The first half had tiny but beautiful Japanese studios with luxury amenities, other similar ones, then the second half was all supposed warehouses of cages that poor people live in in China, in 6x8 metal wire framed boxes basically, and other horrible conditions like that, it was odd as the site was basically HGTV vibes up until that.
One time he went to a US submarine in the Arctic and thanked the soldiers for protecting the USA. AGAINST WHO? Polar bears? What a bootlicking loser.
He was personally involved in the anti-rpg protection systems used on tanks and other armoured vehicles during the Iraq/Afghan wars and is very proud of his work "protecting people".
Sorry to reply 3 days late but do you have a source on this? I stopped watching his channel after the submarine videos (I knew he had worked in a PMC before but figured it was good he left it behind, clearly maintained contacts for the propaganda vids tho). Would like to know more specifics.
At 8:30 of this video he brings it up during his talk at nasa and highlights the fact he can't talk about it for 25 years, he worked on aircraft for the army afterwards and then helped develop Javelin missile systems. He talks quite extensively about his history and so on here because (in his own words) he wanted to establish credibility with the nasa people who would otherwise not give a shit about what he has to say if he were just some youtube guy: https://youtu.be/OoJsPvmFixU?t=510
I think he presents himself in a very friendly way but is a loyal imperialist dog to his very core. A true believer.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Worse was the one where he had some interview with the general in charge of psyops who pointed out that he was disseminating US military propaganda in his videos and he was just like "wow I can't believe it that's so interesting".
SmarterEveryDay is also one of those guys who makes his kids call him sir
The more I learn about different parents, I really think I had a miracle up-bringing, my parents didn't even realize they raised me and my siblings nearly entirely on leftist revolutionary vibes, bless them <3
The day he revealed his real job was the day I stopped watching him, and his creepy factor increased 1000 fold.
I can't wait to see a Joel Haver pro-war add. Him just awkwardly arguing to a depressed looking girl why nuking Iran is good, and then Trent shows up and... idk says he's out of toothpaste or something else quirky.
So between this, that recent upsurge in struggle against ad blockers, and the timing for the beginning of a quarter, one can expect some horrible copyright mutation or a real ethically reprehensible new development. Like you have to become a YouTube employee with US army oversight to use Nintendo IP or something
timing is extra weird IMO, because I think the real dystopian economic inflection point is closer to 1-10 years away, so these people should be grinding while their over-paid careers still exist. But maybe they already have enough in the bank and in the monthly passive incums to retire early or fund their real dream projects. It's like how dark matter explains a gap in the math, but nobody knows what dark matter is. Definitely expecting to find out something.
I feel like they'd have a better grasp of the situation than you would, because they're inside and privy to more information and experience of how it works. I can also imagine some people see the same thing they do and are using the strategy you've suggested, but we can't see that. Tom Scott and matpat both try to avoid problems and real controversy, so if they felt something coming they would naturally dip before getting close to it.
Haver isn't retiring though, he's just going to focus on longer form projects, which I'm sure everyone here will hate.
Yeah lol I was just joking that some of the people on this site have a big hate boner for long YT videos. Haver is making actual narrative films though that just happen to be on YT
Is Haver someone I should be interested in? I like long form videos (that I largely listen to, not watch)
that I largely listen to, not watch
Havers long form stuff are actual narrative films so you'd have to actually watch them.
His videos are good tho. Little formulaic but often pretty funny.
If they're talking about joel haver he's got a couple videos with a great bit where a reformed RPG villain gives therapy to other villains
If you’re familiar with any kind of YouTube skit channel, then it’s basically that, but usually more focus on the awkwardness of social situations with some absurdity to it. Maybe imagine Nathan Fielder mixed with Donald Glover’s magical realism.
I like most of them. I thought it was weird when he had like 6 videos about cr1tikal but everything else was good.
He wants to put out a feature length film every month, he's ramping up.
Wasn’t that his shift in focus last time? To move around and film what he considered more personal and thoughtful stuff. But it seemed like he just filmed the same type of skits lol. But tbf I wasn’t too in tune with his releases so idk if they were just side content during that era.
English guyy in the top left pane wanted to use unpaid work and ideas for his videos as he'd run out of ideas.... Nobody called him out on it.
Are you talking about the AI content or something else? Because using it to come up with ideas is honestly not a problem in my opinion. If someone suggests something in conversation it's not stealing to do it, especially if it's vague like the AI prompts usually are
Nah he literally made a whole video on asking people to give him everything from ideas to scripts.. ideas are one thing, but full scripting is work.
He didn't lie, trick anyone, or steal anything. I can see why you'd dislike it, but people voluntarily giving up their own labor is not something I get worked up over, especially when we don't know if he even used it.
Did Tom Scott used any unpaid labor or ideas as of yet?
Tom Scott asks viewers if they know of any interesting places for him to go visit, since his videos are about interesting places and things. Nothing crazy, essentially like a music critic asking if any fans want an album reviewed. Which many will actually charge for via Patreon. The fan who requests the video didn't make the video. Many of his videos contain too much personal experience to be plagarised or anything of the sort, it's obvious that Tom at least has a major role in writing the videos.
Plus, he pays people to subtitle and revoice his videos in a ton of different languages. I think it's odd to assume that he doesn't pay people that help with writing when it's been shown that he pays people for services that Google literally asks fans to do for free.
Calling it "wanting to use ideas for free" is technically accurate but wrong. Asking fans what videos they want to see typically isn't seen as a bad thing. Dude traveled the globe for a decade looking for random cool shit and local town lores, of course he's asking his giant community for leads on weird local things.
Yeah, I was thinking something like that.... he didn't strike me as malicious at all in his intent...
I dont know tbh, he kind of shut down any questions in the comments, and I unsubbed shortly after. Plus his little fans got quite abusive when people did ask.
Is the tweet suggesting we can infer the existence of youtube with the loss of creators? I mean.....I guess? Not a major revelation though.
I think the implication is that the US has a clandestine memes of mass destruction project
The idea is there's either some project they're working on, or some other problem that's currently out of public eyes they're avoiding.
Game theory: how many lives did I SAVE by nuking a population center with little military capability?
no they're suggesting there's a social media nuclear weapon being built
There is not a small enough number to express how little of a fuck I give about any one of these people quitting
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
so they're implying that a bunch of internet celebs are....building a bomb?
Maybe if it was NileRed I could believe them
bit idea: youtubers who are quitting make one last video of themselves playing with a demon core
Is scient people a way of saying scientists or are they the Sient people of the Scient Nation?
Joel Haver isn't quitting, he actually entering a phase where he is going to do more YouTube work. That video was him saying he's done with he weekly video and is now going to do a film length video every month.
