molly used to just be a class of ecstasy, basically unpressed powder or crystals. a decade ago tons of MDMA-like research chemicals exploded onto the market which every sketchy dealer could now sell as "pure molly" since they were all various white powders. thus the kids just started calling all ecstasy "molly". most have never actually done real MDMA. edit: molly = molecule/molecular purity
