I don't listen to many left wing podcasts but the deprogram is pretty epic and, unlike most podcasts (political or otherwise), actually has a very international group of hosts

Seconding Live Like The World Is Dying, though iirc there's a disappointing amount of brainworms about "tankies" in some episodes

The Dollop is one of my go-tos. It does have a political position, but it's a mix of shocking and inspiring stories from American* history that usually are less known, with a balance of narration and comedic acting/riffs.

          It's balancing.

Typically I'm doing something in addition to listening so I'm not in "listen to a podcast like a lecture" mode. The slower pace means I don't miss anything if my attention fluctuates a little.

I second The Dollop, aside from TrashFuture it’s probably my favorite there is. I especially recommend episodes 323 - 1908 New York to Paris Car Race, or 101 - The Death of George Washington as good ones to start out with.

If you're into gardening I like The Revolutionary's Garden and if you also like ecology, Poor Prole's Almanac.

Also a big +1 for Citations Needed.

If you're into engineering or disasters, I like :wtyp: but sometimes they have lib takes and terminal podcaster brain. On the plus side, one of the hosts who's prone to garbage takes about AES has an extremely cool Trot father who dunks on him for them after the episode airs.

Who Makes Cents: A History of Capitalism Podcast

they do an ep like every few weeks or so. it's out of berkley and been around since before like podcasts exploded, so sometimes the audio levels are a little low, but it's the most informative podcast i listen to. some of the topics are wild. it's a truly educational format with the host doing insightful Q and A with an author of a book (invariably some young-ish academic and the book is like the result of years of painstaking research) about the topic.

i recommend it to everybody because i really like it, but nobody else ever gets into it. so i guess i'm a fuckin' massive dork.

    Edit: Here's a great episode...

Suzanna Reiss on Drug Control, Coca-Cola, and Pharmaceuticals

Today’s guest discusses the history of the coca leaf and the U.S. drug control regime. Amongst other topics, we discuss the importance of coca to both Coca-Cola and Merck and the pharmaceutical industry. For Suzanna Reiss, this provides a way to interpret the history of capitalism across the mid-twentieth century and after.

Suzanna Reiss is Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She is author of We Sell Drugs: The Alchemy of US Empire. https://whomakescents.libsyn.com/suzanna-reiss-on-drug-control-coca-cola-and-pharmaceuticals

This is hell! is a really excellent leftist interview podcast that interviewed leftist authors/academics mostly and asks good questions.

Citations needed is excellent. Huge back catalog with lots of topics and really insightful perspectives on them.

Vibe out with matt Christman on the grill stream / cushvlog

My favorite podcast is Why Theory. I've never read a book in my life but if you listen enough you can sort of understand what they're talking about.

Conversations with Tyler. Warning- Tyler Cowen is a libertarian economist. But he also interviews authors, musicians and :zizek-preference:

blowback is about american empire. it's covered the history of american interventions in iraq and cuba and is starting its third season on korea soon.

the shriekcast was a harry potter reread podcast that really digs into jkr's worldview and how much of a piece of shit she is, and the signs that showed up in her books, going chapter by chapter into all the weird fucked up things within. they've moved on to reading twilight, and are applying a similar approach.

just king things takes a similar approach to the works of stephen king, going book by book through everything he ever published.

yeah. they divide each episode into 3 segments. the first is news (harry potter or jkr related), the second is the chapter(s) they read, and the third is miscellaneous. they spent at least one third segment looking through the harry potter sacred texts stuff, maybe more.

also the patreon bonus episodes are the reason i read the when they cry series, which is super close to my heart now.

edit: it's worth noting that they have some long episodes, especially whenever joanne does something especially heinous they need to talk about in the news segment. a few of those episodes reach 3 or 4 hours, which is a lot

I’m listening to the first episode right now! And trust me I am soooooo okay with insanely long episodes dissecting how JKR fucking sucks. I listened to every single episode of West Wing Thing despite having never seen an episode of The West Wing. Shaun’s like 2 hour video dissecting Harry Potter and why it sucks is one of my favorite things ever

shaun's harry potter video really reminded me of the shriekcast, so if you liked that you'll probably like them. i don't remember if it's the first episode, but in one of the first few episodes they explicitly call jkr a terf, before she really had anything beyond that one 'middle aged moment', and they really document the whole mask off process.
