Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club Weekly Megathread!

We’re kicking things off with a space just for vegans! Inspired by our friends over at Hexbear, this thread is the spot to chat about what’s on your mind, what’s happening, and what you’re planning for the week.

Feel free to talk about anything, whether it’s vegan-related or not. This is a chill space for connecting, sharing ideas, and supporting each other.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to!

Got any ideas?

We’re also taking suggestions for essay topics, recommended readings, or any resources that could help each other out. Feel free to drop in links, ask for advice, or contribute any other materials you think would be useful for the community and we can start adding to the megathread.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to and what we can explore together!

Check out our communities:

  1. Vegan Home Cooks
  2. Vegan Recipes
  3. Gardening
  4. Vegan
  5. Vegan Infographics
  6. The Bee Hive
  7. Art
  8. Book Club
  9. DIY

The communities are here to help share links and photos for vegans by vegans.

Vegan Home Cooks is a site for a discord server called Vegan Home Cooks Discord. This is a low-friction post-what-you-cooked community so we can share what we made today and talk about it, no recipes required. We want to provide motivation and encouragement for each other and show off what we made today.

Vegan Recipes is focused on how to cook and links to recipe sites.

Gardening is focused on our gardens, plants, hydroponics and learning how to do it. Some of us are pros and some are just learning and want to post what we're reading and what we're doing.

Vegan is for general vegan news

Vegan Infographics for vegan infographics and agitprop

Art All things art, preferably by vegans but not required.

Book Club Our sort of monthly book club, we finished reading Fanon but never had our final post. We're going to get that going and do fiction for September/October. Also post about whatever you are reading!

DIY Do it yourself! This is a community to fix our shit.

Our communities are federated with various other servers running software called Lemmy. If you have an account on one of those servers you can still subscribe to our communities from your home server and participate. If you create an account with us you can also view other federated communities across multiple Lemmy servers we are linked up with.

Been feeling the crushing weight of vystopia lately. It's disappointing that almost everyone I know is more interested in their own convenience than justice. Over the last ~7 years I've basically lost interest in maintaining relationships with my non vegan friends (that are left lmao).

Where I live is pretty cliquey and carnist which has made finding meatspace vegan friends hard. Half of those I've met are wishy washy health cheating "vegans" which also sort of suck.

I'm glad my wife and my sisters are all vegan though. At least I do have a few people I'm really close to who understand that there is a difference between right and wrong.

This is so hard. My partner is vegan and I'm grateful for online vegan spaces like this. I went to a local-ish vegan speed friending event more than a year ago and many people were vegetarian 🤮 and/or a cop of some type.

I've been thinking of making some animal rights related artwork lately. My main influences as an artist are Francisco de Goya and Frida Kahlo and my style of artwork is very much political related and the kind where I want my audience to really think about the world. I'm trying to come up with some ideas as to how I could make it work.

What kind of art are you interested in making? Painting? Mixed media? Digital? Music?

I love Frida Kahlo, a few years ago I went to a show at the NY botanical gardens that combined plants and her artwork and it was a really incredible and memorable show https://www.nybg.org/about/institutional-information/past-exhibitions/frida-kahlo-art-garden-life/

A few years ago is almost 10 years ago haha

My style is typically painting and mixed media, sometimes I like to make small sculptures to get my point across. Honestly really just depends how I feel and what I'm in the mood to create lol.

And wow, that show looked like it was amazing. I've never seen a Kahlo exhibition or show in person but it's definitely on my to-do list.

I'll start. I recently got some bloods done and I am very magnesium deficient (0.4 mmol/L) which would probably explain the chest pain, tremors, and eye twitches I get. Fortunately it should be pretty easy to fix and it seems to be the only deficiency I have right now (other electrolytes, iron, vitamin d, are all good), I'll just have to start taking more magnesium supplements. Has anyone experienced magnesium deficiency before? What foods to you eat to combat it?

Leafy greens, tofu, chocolate, avocados, nuts and seeds are all high in magnesium. It is funny vegans have a reputation for vitamin deficiency but when you look at the stats its pretty much across the board, we are the only ones paying attention and testing. I learned recently everyone over 50 should be taking B12 which suggests it is a much larger issue than something for vegans yet it is a hyper focus here.

I think you're doing great though, you figured it out and the supplements work. I think its a good thing to have to eat more tofu, seeds and greens!
