Worse than even Trump winning with a House and Senate super majority.
It was definitely the advertising. We were swarmed by yes on 22 ads starring poc app drivers begging to remain as independent contractors
Imagine having such serious brain worms that you vote democrats down ballot and vote for prop 22 (which state democrats opposed and even Biden came out against it)
I feel like Uber was able to have a HUGE influence with both money and the fact that they could instantly ping every person in california that has Uber installed on their phone telling them their precious Uber will go away if they don't fall in line to dismantle workers rightsl.
The narrative used by uber was that drivers would be put out of work, pulling at the heartstrings of voters who probably unironically believed they were voting progressively and not sending us back to the fucking gilded age.
They poured insane amounts of propaganda into it.
They did more shit that should be illegal. Uber just flouts the law, it's insane. It's absolutely insane what this company gets away with. Every fucking employee deserves to be in prison, including the coders. Send them for 6 months of fucking ethics classes and then make them work for minimum wage until they fucking fail.
Send the execs to prison for forever.
Gig companies dropped almost $200m in adds to get it through. That doesn't even include every time you open their app making you sit through a pop up ass saying to vote yes on it.
Americans are too dumb to do real research on stuff.
Honestly I find it so pathetic because democrats control all levers of government in california and they kinda just let this happen? How did they not see this coming over the past decades? They knew they had this system of propositions and no one thought "gee maybe we should enact some reforms so a corporation doesn't exploit our system of citizen propositions"
I hate the Democrats but there isn't a lot they can do in this case. The problem is money in politics and the supreme court has ruled against spending limits for the last 40 years. Obviously this gets even worse with citizen initiatives but it is what it is.
That said, I think Democrats only passed that law because they figured it'd get defeated at the ballot and they can walk with their hands clean "Well, the people have spoken!".
Can't we just run anti-Prop 22 like every two years even if it keeps losing? These companies like Uber don't make any fucking money, they would basically go bankrupt if they have to keep doing what they did this time.
Can and should, and the dems should move to just kill them via legislature.
and the dems should move to just kill them via legislature
IIRC Prop 22 adds in a 7/8 majority requirement to change it
I didn't say attack the legislation, I'm saying deliberately drive Uber into the fucking ground.
That has to be illegal. Otherwise couldn't morons put in a clause into laws like "this law can never be overturned."
Nah you've just found the line for libs. "can never" will be a big "no no." But 7/8 - well Mr. you just need to buckle down and be more popular dang it!
Fuck. This was one I was really hoping would not get through. Guess people in the cities couldn't bear the thought of paying more for Ubers.
Proposition 19 passed too. Fucking more generational wealth transfer to the old.
California proposition results are almost all disappointing as fuck. That dialysis shit is on the ballot every year and nobody wants to regulate dialysis clinics apparently.
Prop 19 means that you have to at least live in the house you inherit to keep the tax basis. You can't inherit your parents' vacation home without it getting re-assessed now.
Who cares how many times old people can move?
Old people are the ones who already own fucking houses. This gives them more massive fucking tax breaks while doing nothing for the majority. It’s bullshit.
They can already transfer the tax basis once. Why do you think it matters if they can do it three times now instead?
I'd trade all the old people getting to do that if it means the movie star kids don't get to pay nothing on their parents' six houses in Malibu.
State CBO had this as a net positive for revenue anyway.
It's tax breaks for the wealthy.
It's just another giveaway for a different group.
It's essentially the continuance of the status quo for people over 55 in terms of taxes and closes a very big giveaway for inherited wealth. If it didn't pass the old people would simply not move instead and nothing would have changed anyway except now we get to tax failchildren who are landlords using inherited property.
hey remember a couple weeks ago how the California GOP put out fake ballot boxes, California said you can't do that, and the GOP ignored them?
Yes I saw a post about it, you just aren't terminally online enough.
Fucking posers
Any driver who supports this is a class traitor and they deserve every bit as much hatred as the people who funded it. CMV.
sorry I don't have more sympathy for selfish fuckheads who vote away labor rights because they are too fucking stupid to take 10 minutes before voting.
This hypothetical person deserves to be publicly shamed as a lazy fool. I have sympathy for the decent people she fucked over, not for her. She's a fucking scab and deserves to be treated like it.
and how much fucking effort does it take to realize that when the company pushes propaganda this aggressively, you should probably vote against it as your first instinct and make a not to look into it a bit more.
Uber's shady tactics mean being uninformed (as a driver) is no excuse.
Not everyone can take time to critically think "am I being mislead by the people I am depending on for a living?"
Also, as a neurodivergent person, it isn't crazy to me that someone would try and trust what the provider of their livlihood is saying. I'm always worried I am an unreliable narrator in reality. For a lot of people that insecurity extends to politics and it unfortunatly makes them susceptable to misinformation. Thinking this is their fault for being a "lazy fool" ignores so much about the struggles these people go through. If this a bit that I'm too on the spectrum to get feel free to ignore this comment.
I'm sick of this lovey dovey bullshit. It's fucking cucked liberal bullshit.
These people are fucking scabs. They have no fucking solidarity and they deserve nothing less than the same hatred Uber gets. yes on 22 should be yes on getting your fucking tires slashed.
Me: Dude sometimes I don't even know if reality is real without asking for help. How is someone like me supposed to always know they're making the right decsion?
You: Doesn't matter, I hate being nice it's cuck shit.
Fuck scabs.
Can't believe that needs to be said on a leftist board. FUCK. SCABS.
Now it's time to completely ignore what I said and double down on the thing no one is arguing you on, okay cool.
Not everyone is intentionally crossing the picket line. They aren't all your enemy. I know leftists that personally came sobbing to me because they were tricked into voting against their interests. If you acknowledge the existence of propaganda you should know how probable this is.
I know leftists that personally came sobbing to me because they were tricked
Yeah, ask them how they were tricked? Ask them what the lies were and why they didn't see through them? Ask them why are too lazy and stupid to spend 5 minutes on this.
Lazy stupid assholes. Fuck them, they deserve to be publicly fucking berated. Lazy fucking assholes.
They’re doing it out of class interests because they’re probably asshole small business owners, tech bro’s and movie producers driving part time because they’re bored or want some extra cash
A lot of them are also old retired people doing it just because they're bored. But there's a lot of idiots who do it as their full time job that bought the Uber propaganda.
It's going to open the fucking floodgates for app-based everything, the amount of money these companies will be able to save with no payroll taxes is crazy, and the drivers will be paying for them because they're independent contractors. People are just so sold on "being your own boss" = freedom = good, it's like jumping off a cliff and thinking you aren't constrained by gravity.
One small step for Uber, Lyft, and Postmates, one giant leap in the race to the bottom!
Ok but i just had a weird thought. So like since most people doing these deliveries actually have possesion of their means of production, what if everything appified. Then everyone just said like, no we are gonna keep driving people around with the new open source version of the app where we keep all our surplus value. Like start up an uber or lyft as a co-op, might be viable if enough drivers jump ship to it.
uber will never, ever, let that slide. if they spent 200 million to ensure they dont have to give healthcare to their workers, theyll spend as much to ensure anyone who tries to compete with them is unable to do so.
Thats fine and good but this is more of an allat once sort of thing. Yeah building it from scratch is nearly impossible, all the contractors moving to a different platform at once is a different scenario. One that would only be feasible by organizing ind contractors(good luck)
I don't see how you keep prices competitive as a co-op when Uber is artificially deflating the market as a direct result of massive VC cash reserves. Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea that I whole heartedly support -- and a necessary one too -- however I think you'd need to be close to price parity and the only reason Uber can achieve that is through really low independent contractor wages.
