I've been running this series over on !games@hexbear.net , and I thought I'd bring it over here in some fashion. The end goal of this series is to get a coherent recommendation list from the people who use this site, in case anyone wants that. Not sure if I want this to cover every genre and decade like I'm doing with /c/games, but we'll see how things shake out.
That being said, since it's been about a month let's hear your picks from last year.
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Moses Sumney - græ
Against All Logic - 2017 - 2019maybe also Sixteen Oceans by Four Tet and The Ascension by Sufjan Stevens
U-Void Synthesizer by Machine Girl , was vibing to this shit when quarantine hit. feels like its been out for longer
I really enjoyed Free I.H. by Illuminati Hotties, I've heard people describe it more as a mixtape than an album but I dunno what the difference is. It's a really fun mix of really upbeat poppy kinda sounds with more punk instrumentals.
God Has Nothing to do With This Leave Him Out of it by Backxwash, is a really interesting album, any Canadians might recognize her as the winner of the Polaris Prize for 2020. Her production style is a really interesting mix of hip-hop, noise, and metal.
I know she gets a lot of coverage already and most people may have heard it but Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers is a great album so it merits a mention. I think it doesn't hit the highs of her first album but it's more interesting instrumentally and more cohesive, some of the songs (Graceland Too) just get me real sad too.
Lastly, Likewise by Frances Quinlan is a pretty good album. I don't think it's as strong as Hop Along's albums but hearing their voice in a more stripped down acoustic setting is a good change of pace. Plus anything where I get to hear France Quinlan screaming is worth listening to for me.
I liked the new Weeknd album and the new Molchat Doma.
Also it may be kinda cringe, but the OST for the game Umurangi Generation is incredible.
People shit on Killer Mike’s politics here, probably rightfully so, but Run the Jewels 4 is still an amazing album
Yeah, I mean the guy is a liberal landlord who flirts with reactionary positions, but he's a damned good aesthetician.

also since I saw someone else put it down I have to say: Against All Logic - 2017-2019 was fantastic
I barely listened to anything I'd call great from last year (or much of anything at all really), so I'm going to keep this kind of basic.

Mindblowingly good punk band from Colombia. Saw them play a couple years ago and they're like... embarassingly good. We have a pretty reputable local scene and some great bands and I've been around and seen a lot of punk bands. These guys are on another level
Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone
This album, written pre-COVID, captures all of 2020. It’s a natural critique of capitalism. It’s great. https://youtu.be/1Mizd6nwJEc
This was my most-listened album of 2020 by far. Absolutely excellent.
Same. Last show I saw before all this shit went down too.
I'm envious! I was supposed to see them on 3/13/20, then the tour was cancelled on the 12th :(
:deeper-sadness: I’m sorry.
Let’s hope shit is okay enough for some live shows soon.
