So what they're saying is that mutual aid seems to be a factor of evolution? Curious.

What's the deal with scientists pretending empathy isn't a huge evolutionary advantage for humans?

Motherfucker… you’ve gotta - you’ve gotta recognize where you are. And then, you’ve gotta get past that. You gotta be - you gotta be unemotional, and i know im not being a great, great uhh display of that myself, but you’ve gotta - you can’t sink into this hole. you LIVE in the oubliette. your job is to crawl up the ladder motherfucker. You live in the hole. You’re in the hole. You are a rat. And the rat, when he’s in the hole, gets FUCKED. People, they only throw trash in the hole. You know what you need to eat? you need to eat a BODY, and you need to carry the plague. And you need to carry the plague around this whole world that will change this whole fucking world. And, and, and - and all your fucking enemies will vomit black bile and they will choke on blood and grow boils and DIE, but only if you get together with your other rats, and you come up with some kinda super-plague, to fuckin END YOUR ENEMIES and END THIS NIGHTMARE.

It takes a lot of exogenous effort to change whatever payoff matrix is in peoples minds wrt prisoners dilemma and shit. The average person would probably do the same if they saw it right in front of them and they had access to the button to release them - but change up being able to see your fellow humans trapped to debt cycles, poverty, prisons hidden away, people dieing of covid and it starts to change the equivalent nash equilibrium in peoples brains to one of self-preservation over mutual aid. Then change the button that could release the prisoner into a distributed and complicated web of relationships that we all have to take part in, change it so people see the button as reformist parliamentarianism and going along just this one time so we can get em in a couple years, and kill the few people that are breaking out of that matrix of control (like Fred Hampton) and you can waste millions of peoples efforts and misdirect peoples natural inclination to help into little busy boxes.
