  • Can't go wrong with a used T series from Ebay that's a couple years old. A quick search shows that you can get something like this for 320USD from a reputable seller:

    Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U 2.10 GHz with Radeon Graphics 16GB 256GB

8GB is too little RAM these days otherwise I would also recommend the X13 model but those start at like 600USD for the 16GB models.

  • He also tried to design a windowless mega-dorm as a weird social experiment of sorts. All around great guy

In his October 25 resignation letter to UCSB Campus Architect Julie Hendricks, Dennis McFadden ― a well-respected Southern California architect with 15 years on the committee ― goes scorched earth on the radical new building concept, which calls for an 11-story, 1.68-million-square-foot structure that would house up to 4,500 students, 94 percent of whom would not have windows in their small, single-occupancy bedrooms.

The idea was conceived by 97-year-old billionaire-investor turned amateur-architect Charles Munger, who donated $200 million toward the project with the condition that his blueprints be followed exactly. Munger maintains the small living quarters would coax residents out of their rooms and into larger common areas, where they could interact and collaborate.

Thankfully it did not get approved.

  • I think there is some value to being grateful if you're in a reasonably good place. Personally, it helps me anchor myself and my emotions better as someone who constantly worries about something.

The same reasoning behind not comparing yourself to others who have it way better than you still applies though. There will always be those who are much better off and those that are much worse off so it's important not get carried away or feel like your problems are not worth worrying or complaining about.

But I also know that whenever it's brought up by other people it's usually to say that your problems don't matter which is why I'm saying it should be something personal. Mostly for basic things like being in good health, having access to food and shelter and not living in a warzone.

I posted a reply to the above comment but the tldr is this is just for straight up slurs and does not ban you but may be used to flag comments for review once that's set up.

It does not limit discussion and is only for the most basic form of racism/hate. Trying to catch all instances with a filter isn't realistic and that's not the goal here.

So for clarification, the filter incorporates some filter avoidance and only includes racial and LGBT slurs and their variants and covers a very small number of words.

Lemmy used to have a slur filter hardcoded into it and that included things like bitch and whore but I don't think those are used in an exclusively misogynistic context so those aren't part of this. That being said the filter only censors the words as such: ******. Mod tools can be used in conjunction with this to flag them but that's still in progress.

If you use one of the very few words that are almost certainly only used in hate speech, it will show up with asterisks. If you're breaking the rules outlined in the instance sidebar then you will warned, suspended or banned regardless of the existence of the filter.

Nothing in particular happened but I think we can all agree that a forum is better when you know that people aren't going to throw the nword at you which was possible before this. It's still possible if you're persistent and use symbols (or, better yet, dogwhistles) but that's not the point. This just acts as a hurdle and a moderation tool.
