It feels like the sort of thing that therapists reserve only for binary trans people, but I don't know how true that is.

You are absolutely allowed to lie to a doctor if you have to. Fuck the bullshit gatekeeping. Tbf depending on your area there might be decent doctors that you don't have to lie to though.
