Having trouble getting a grasp on Castillo's actual positions. He's running in a ML party but doesn't consider himself a communist. Is he closer to like an Evo Morales, pink wave kinda politician than a Castro type?

From what I’ve seen he’s left wing when it comes to economics and foreign policy but is more conservative on social issues like abortion and same sex marriage. Kind of a weird set of positions but I’m not an expert in Peruvian politics. I think it’s just another situation of him not being a perfect candidate but the opposition is far worse.

That's more or less the case with OG leftists in Latin America. Most older leftists I know hold a lot of traditional left-wing ideas in economics and a few social issues like indigenous rights and women's suffrage (minus abortion). The same can't be said for lgbt or abortion rights and a lot of it is due to religion. The younger generation is getting better but it still isn't great and still somewhat polarizing, at least where I live anyway. Costa Rica is apparently better with lgbt issues.
