I cannot recommend enough going on eBay and buying a refurbished Kindle. They're like $40-90 and genuinely good devices. You can just get all your books through your library and send them to the kindle, or use Calibre and transfer files from LibGen for free to the device. Amazon never has to see a single red cent, and you still get really good hardware. I think Kindles tend to punch significantly above their cost because Amazon subsidizes them partially in the hopes that they'll lock you into their storefront, but you can literally just sideload every book you want via email or over USB. I paid like $80 for a Kindle Oasis on eBay and it whips ass.
