Hello all once again! As we approach the end of the year, my gift to all of you is a weekly general thread. You might say that I post one of these each week. You would be right. However, I like to think of it as something I gift to you each week, so it still works. In any case, feel free to post any on-topic things that strike your fancy. Some possible conversation starters might include:

  • I watched all of Cowboy Bebop and I don't get it. Bebop never showed up at all! Why is the show named after him?
  • I have a date I invited over for dinner. What episode of Food Wars should I watch to prepare for cooking dinner?
  • I stopped by my local donut shop and couldn't find any of the jelly donuts like they eat in Pokemon. Any recommendations?

As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here.

Rather than writing about what I have watched this past week, I decided to look ahead at the upcoming season of anime and check out shows that looked interesting. My first pass led me to some shows that I am debating watching, but I will likely need to cut this down due to time. I divided it into shows I am familiar with the source and those that I am not.

    Familiar with the source:

    • Frieren will be continuing. Definitely continuing with this one.
    • Tsukimichi Season 2 - I enjoyed the source for this story and am glad to see it continuing. The story only gets better as it goes. If you thought season 1 was a bit generic, I agree with you. However, the story becomes more interesting as it goes. Not quite sure if the animation might be stepped up for season 2 or not though.
    • The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - The opening parts of this story are where it is at its best. So I am looking forward to this show and the character Rose in particular.
    • Villainess Level 99 - I love the source for this series, but the character is so dense that it turns some off. If they get the humor right in this show, it could be great.

    Not familiar with the source:

    • Solo Leveling - Source readers have hyped this series from long before there was even an announcement of an anime adaptation. I suspect this one is going to be popular, but it might not really be my type of show.
    • Dungeon Meshi - This one has been a really popular manga and it is being made by Studio Trigger. Worth a look for sure.
    • Metallic Rouge - I have only seen the poster for this series and I love it. Will check it out more to see if it is worth giving a shot.
    • 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess - I have read a couple chapters of this manga, but not enough to really call myself familiar with it. It seems like a fun little series for those times I just want to relax though.

@ram@lemmy.ca if you would be so kind as to do the pinning/unpinning, it would be appreciated.

Ooooooh I didn’t know Frieren was continuing for next season! It’s really gonna get my aoty for 2 years in a row, isn’t it…

The others aren’t really jumping at me. Might be lighter for my tastes, so maybe I’ll catch up with all the stuff I missed from the current season.

Dungeon meshi, metallic rouge and solo leveling I will propably check out.

Vilaness lvl 99 it is in "3.6 not great not terrible" range. If I will need something to fill my time I will propably pick it up. In LN the main arc was quite nicely contained with satysfying ending. I don't know how much of the source material they will adapt.

Yeah, I was reading the WN for Villainess Level 99 and dropped it shortly after the main arc. It reached a pretty satisfying conclusion and the story after that felt kind of forced, plus I just had too many other things competing for my time.

I had somewhat written SpyXFamily off after the second half of S1. I disliked several of the characters and it seemed to be going nowhere (especially a certain mini sports arc). But I’ve caught up with S2 now and it’s the most I’ve enjoyed the series since the first three episodes. Makes me way more optimistic for the future of the series.

Almost caught up with Helck and I didn’t think the extensive flashbacks were nearly as bad as I’d heard about. I thought it was pretty compelling and added a surprising depth to the world building. Still enjoying this one a lot.

I’m almost caught up with Girlfriend, Girlfriend and it’s not quite succeeding as much as the first season for me. The incredibly stupid moments of the beginning made up for the dumbness of the harem. I’m there for the dumb, and there’s only been a few moments I actually lol’d at. The sincere heartfelt moments don’t really work for me, since I think the concept of the harem is so ridiculous. Except maybe Shino. She’s so sincere and somewhat has a brain, so she feels like she might be an actual character.

I feel kinda similarly about 100 Girlfriends. I’m there for the ridiculousness, but they’ve been including several sincere moments that I struggle with. I’m pretty far behind here though. Maybe it gets better.

I think the Helck flashbacks wouldn't have been as bad if I was bingeing it, but watching week to week, it felt very drawn out. Since the flashbacks have ended, I have gotten more into it again.

As for Girlfriend, Girlfriend and 100GF, I have written before that I think I enjoyed the series more in manga form. I think that Shino is by far the best character in GF, GF though, so you have excellent taste in that department.
