The comments are way worse because they think this is the best thing ever made. Although there’s some clearly brain rotted comments calling this a “leftist meme.” We really need to re-educate people or …

Not only do they not mention cartel price-fixing, but they break out the "pretend it's a free market from my Econ 101 textbook" bit and say that of course someone would have just taken a smaller margin and brought prices down.

The evo psych shit about "humans always needing some display of status and fitness" kinda gives it away.

Granted, if he's a self-loathing abrasive nazi psychopath who's afraid that his beta skull shape could make his gf try to fuck half of the town while he's at work, trying to trick said gf into marriage by throwing shiny baubles at her may seem like something he just can't do without.

It's not the most outlandish idea, but it's weak sauce (literally "well everyone else is doing it, so...") and it's buried in a pile of shit.

We often want to give people a little credit for stuff like that, because we're reflexively seeking some grounds for agreement with them. That's a fine approach for talking with other leftists or trying to get something meaningful accomplished in the real world, but outside of those contexts we should be a lot more sparing with it.

Having the ability to conform is useful, absolutely. But this ad is trying to justify "some people will judge me if I don't buy a diamond ring for my fiancée," and it's actively encouraging people not to take even a small step to change that ("I'm not trying to start a movement").

If you're concerned about providing for your wife in a trad way, why dont you try and get her a house, or a car or a piece of land or something? I value that way more than a rock anyway.
