    He thought the books were essentially based on real events but that they were vile Christian propaganda against Nordic Pagan Vikings ie Sauron and the orcs, who were the real heroes of the story. He still liked LOTR enough to call himself Grishnakh and call his band Burzum, though

        Varg is a huge dumbass and it's fruitless to try to make sense of his bullshit. He also hates civilisation and has a whole anprim thing going on, which doesn't really mesh with the bad guys in LOTR also representing industrialisation.
