      Nobody in Eastern Europe thought of themselves as "white" before the concept of whiteness was picked up from the Americans. Before people just identified by nationality and maybe in a vague sense with their broader ethno-linguistic group (slavic, turkic, etc.), though even that was not always the case. "Whiteness" is a nonsensical, artificial concept imported from the West that lumps together people who historically very much would not have appreciated being lumped together.

        It still does not have sense outside USA, even in such a racist country like Poland the word is used 100% cases just about skin colour with predictable variations for the users. Same probably goes for "black" if we asked Africans and so on.
