They need ways to justify mass layoffs that are coming due to wage pressures/labor shortages/pandemic revealing job waste all pushing companies towards more automation.
We used to have to account for every hour worked per pay period. At the end of the week I would sit down go back through my week and put half hour after half hour into different buckets. Planning, training, install, travel, meetings, etc. It wasted a good three hours of productivity per employee per month as we all sat down to justify our existence.
we can do better than that! put down a half hour every day for time accounting! now you've got 2.5 hours per week!
I did that in protest lmao. Every day I logged 15 minutes to timekeeping. Much happier at a place where I don't have to waste my time filling out a timesheet that'll be glanced over once by someone above my bosses' boss and forgotten. Huge bullshit factor imo
I refuse to work for a company that doesn't give me root access over my machine. I can get away with that request due to my line of work but it sucks for everyone else.
Personally I call it “Snitch-tech”, all of these apps, software, and services snitch on you in ways you can't even imagine. The worst part is that many of them work in tandem. I hate how much surveillance capitalism goes undiscussed in general information, privacy, and data “discourse”. If a physical human person did half the shit snitch-tech do, they would open to charges like stalking, menacing harassment, trespassing, endangerment, and other legal terms I don't fully understand but probably apply.
This is why i keep my work laptop at work and I do my WFH from my macbook, so the only peepers are the :fedposting:

Thank God I'm a programmer. They can't say with any certainty that I'm not working just because I'm not actively using my PC, because a huge portion of the job is just sitting around thinking about stuff.
if you are doing work stuff on a personal device, please run it in a VM. Its not perfect but st least it's sandboxed
