Is anyone actually defending China's practices? I know Covid Zero is a noble goal, but this virus will be with us in perpetuity. So they shut down large cities for weeks on end, it only takes the next round of infections to shut it back down all over again.

Are you realy that naive or what? Do you think minor inconveniences around the economy justifies millions of people getting infected and who knows how many deaths?

Think beyond the short term. Long COVID is a serious condition that the west wants to forget but over the next few years(if not decades COVID will be our generation's lead poisoning) just the healthcare costs of long covid together with the economic activity side effects will more than compensate for the lockdowns.

You could argue China is just being nice to their people, but it goes beyond that. Avoiding the social economic costs of 1 billion people being infected with COVID is just pragmatism.

Finaly the majority of people in China support the lockdowns anyway.

Taiwan just pivoted away from Covid Zero after seeing the futility. It's only a matter of time for China to do so also, not that face-saving obstinance isn't getting in the way...
