I just need there not to be 3d mechs. I have never seen 3d anime integrated with 2d in a way that didn't look jarring and "float-y".
The first movie is a lot more fun. The second feels like a two hour MGS scene (not that it's a bad thing).
It was jarring to see the shift in tone. The first movie looks like a goofy 80s action anime, and then the second one looks all depressing and militaristic.
They are both quite amazingly put together. Movie 2 in particular is one of the most "cinematic" things to have come out of anime. So much so that it changed the approach towards screen composition and layouts in japanese animation ever since
I haven't watched too much patlabor, only got like halfway through the first one, but it's still the only mech anime I've watched and liked. (Nothing against mech anime, just not my bag of marbles)
I only didn't finish it because I had other things come up, but I'm very excited for this and will probably watch the rest when I get more reliable internet
The first two movies are great. Especially Patlabor 2: The Movie. But, I'm a sucker for Oshii's wistful vibes like Ghost In The Shell and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.
1988 OVA -> Movie 1 -> Movie 2 -> Movie 3 this timeline is the easiest one to get into since the tv show is long. If you like what you see here then you can do the tv show >1991 ova timeline afterwards
If you saw and liked Ghost In The Shell, I'd recoomend Patlabor 2: The Movie. The first movie is more fun though.
It's also worth noting that a :the-pigs: car is called "pato ka" (Patrol car in Japanese phonetics and shortened) inJapanese.
