This was mostly a joke, in case that wasn't clear. I do think people over-hype it a little. It was pretty interesting and had solid consistent mechanics and a well-developed plot. Also skipped a lot of typical anime BS about power scaling or characters relative power level shifting randomly. It's just too bleak to ever be in my favorites.
