I've got a growing collection of vintage computers, anyone here also enjoy collecting? I'm not very good at EE so my repair adventures have been poor, but they make nice display and discussion pieces if nothing else. Currently have:
- Macintosh SE
- Commodore 64c
- TRS-80
- HP 95lx
Interesting, I've never used Amiga machines. The closest is GEOS on the C64 I believe
That looks pretty cool, the most I've gotten into vintage audio is vinyl and cassettes.
i have a COMPAQ portable sitting on my shelf, its fully fucntional. took me a week to restore it
Usually my repairs take place over months and me making it worse than it already is.
I'm a fiend for LaserDisc. Got 600+ discs and around a half-dozen players, I think. It's something I always looked on in awe when I was a kid but now that I'm a big boy I can afford them!
LaserDisc is very cool. I found CEDs with my friend once and still looking for a player - very sad technology!
Oh geez, CED. What an incredible example of sunk cost. I've got a handful of discs (and a player, barely functional, that I dug out of a barn somewhere). It's still stunning that RCA saw that project to completion for whatever reason. Don't spend too much on a player if you find one, it's really not worth it beyond curiosity.
Have you seen Technology Connection's series on the CED? Five parts over like 2 hours but it's awesome https://youtu.be/PnpX8d8zRIA
I haven't had much experience with UK computers, they def made a splash over there though and I think we can thank that spirit for the Raspberry Pi.
I've got a BBC micro, a Pentium 75, and an Amiga 500 in working order. I'm more into vintage sewing machines though.
My house is covered with my mother's sewing machines. Very cool pieces of engineering as well.
Yeah, from what I've heard of vintage computing youtube channels Floppies used to be made super well and it wasn't until their EOL that the quality really took a nose dive. Still I was impressed all the info that survived on the floppies I got with my C64c
Apple II is one computer I really want to own. I really like the aesthetics and implementation of MS Basic they use.
I fucking LOVED the C64. So many good games on that thing.
Funny you should post this: earlier today I was going through some stuff and found a pong console with like 8 different games from the 70s.
Mine is currently dead I believe. I really need to get around to repairing it. Had a blast playing Wheel of Fortune with it while it was functional though, surprisingly enjoyable for how simple it is - the dated 80s references is also pretty funny.
