Idk, I think it's cool that some people devote themselves so fully to their passions. I would go all in on breeding threatened fish species if I could support myself while doing it, and I think it is sad to see someone separated from their labor like this - especially a project that they've become so emotionally invested in. If you took away my sunfish I've been raising from fry, I'd probably have a public meltdown, too. Regardless of how intelligent they actually are, I have a personal relationship with them - perhaps bordering on anthropomorphizing at times - based on the work I've put into their care.
It's just a crying shame that more of us don't get paid to work on the things we actually want to work on, and it's an even greater shame that we don't have any say over what happens with the product of our labor.
