    Mountain goats are not in the same genus as goats. In the bovidae family, mountain goats are associated with antelopes, gazelles and cattle.

      Not calling it a goat is a bit of a stretch, since all of its closest relatives are animals that also have colloquial names with "goat" in them.

      Then again, if this is supposed to be a goat, then sheep are goats too.

        When I was studying Chinese, my teacher taught me both sheep and goats are 羊 (then went on to explain more specific terms)

        I've always believed this to be basically true since they can hybridize

        MG's closest relative is the takin, which is totally a goat, even if it's an absolute freak
