I ended up checking the frontend code because this annoyed me enough and I found old code that logs out if a certain request fails with a 400 or 401 http error. why it's doing that I have no idea at all, especially because those are client errors not server ones

Almost certainly an anti-wrecker mechanism that was implemented because of a specific method of attack that was occurring.
