Fuck that was a terrible time for mainstream music
early 2000s had some unfortunate trends, but it had good rnb jams and hip hop club songs that were good, and then the tail end of bubblegum had some good songs too.
i hated this song at the time, because i thought i was above "emo" stuff, but now i kinda realize this is a good ass pop song, deliciously cheesy chorus and full of melodramatics. i guess its an acquired taste? or its nostalgia.
Why do people call this emo? It's mainstream butt-rock with bad high school poetry lyrics.

I assume people called it emo because starting in the 2000s, everyone who wasn't a pedantic music nerd used emo to refer to anything with highly emotional lyrics
