The dude willingly violated every single tenet of "self defense" by inserting himself into a situation that would lead to him needing to "defend himself" with a weapon. There is a reason self defense starts with de-escalation or removing yourself from scenarios where you can be hurt. It's literally the reason all the videos of cops going buckwild is such a powerful tool: normal people see them as escalating and making it needlessly violent.
