It would be cool if you could play as other races and they all had their own ways of doing economy. Like the dwarves are communal but humans use money and have to deal with all the economy issues.
Humans nearby decide that the dwarven economy is a danger to their own wealth so they start funding any group that hates the dwarven colony. Every time a dwarf so much as slips in blood, headlines will be written about "HOW UNSAFE IS IT IN THE EVIL DWARF KINGDOM?" Color revolutions everywhere.

There is a mod called Master Work or something where you can play as different races, and they have different attributes and ways of doing things. I haven't played it very much but it seems cool. I don't think they have different economic systems though.
Dwarves don't even understand coins, they just leave them scattered around on the floor.
