Yeah i highly doubt :macron: is serious about this, he just needs a distraction so people don't go full jacobin on him.

Although it's interesting that he goes with multipolarism instead of his usual culture war shtick of being more islamophobic than the nazi party.

He's just spent several days with Xi. They must have agreed on something.

Something is going on the timing of this coming straight off talks is extremely obvious and very intentionally signal-ey.

These people KNOW american collapse is coming and don't want Europe to collapse with it, rats might be abandoning the sinking ship.

This sounds great but they're not going anywhere. Our banks have lent to them and we will see those debts repaid. Fun fact: that's why the US entered the Great War. In 1916 Germany was winning and if that happened they weren't going to pay back the loans. So Woodrow Wilson sent enforcers over to ensure the banks got their money.

Many Americans felt betrayed and questioned that the war had been an epic battle between the forces of good (democracy) and evil (autocracy), as it had been depicted in pro-war propaganda. This investigation of these "merchants of death" helped to bolster sentiments favoring neutrality, non-interventionism, disarmament, and taking the profits out of weapons procurements.

France and UK are the largest arms dealers in Europe, so its no surprise he wants to decouple from the US market. Also, with London bleeding out like a stuck pig over Brexit, he's probably got a few attentive ears in Berlin and Zurich on the currency thing.

Domestically, it would have been a clever play five years ago. But now? Dude's already so deep in the polls that this shit won't matter. If you want French Nationalism, Le Pen doesn't have all that baggage. If you want anti-Imperialism, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is at least somewhat credible on the issue.

Macron is plowing a middle ground right into irrelevance.
