there are actually handrails on the turret - it's just that apparently every single guy has decided not to make use of them
Could just be for the photo-op, although I'm not sure how visible the fumes would actually be. The tanks are also probably not moving very fast, so the guys don't fall of.
Imagining a tank gunning it over a hill and catching air with 12 guys being flung off in all directions.
