If you're looking to catch panfish like perch I highly suggest just getting a cheap jerk pole and rigging it up with a jig. Then just chill out and drink beer while floating near some underwater terrain. (This always worked well for me with crappie and I think they are pretty similar to perch in behavior)

Game fish like bass I've never been the best fisher for.
