rage faces kind of exploded from earlier, more elaborate comics that would get drawn on 4chan. They used to be hand drawn and were popular around 2006, but at a certain point more people wanted in on the game, so they started becoming more simple and made from a limited supply of pre-drawn assets. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
