    China's at 1.2B and growing. The US has peaked at 330M, no matter what MattY tells you. Xi's simply got more money in the pot than Trump. Who can blame him for taking this seriously.

    China's planning for 2100 while Americans are trying to figure out how to make it through the next quarter.

    The US is declining faster than anyone in power wants to admit. I think we'll have China putting on sanctions or something stronger to get the US finally off fossil fuels within the next 50 years

    the discourse on this makes me wanna punch a fucking wall. of course china has more emissions theyre a fucking huge country. its beyond insane that people cant understand that a country with 4 times the population of the us having twice as much emissions is badly indicative of the us not china. the us has contribute more cumulative co2 emissions than any country in history. more over the past century than the next 3 countries combined.

    At that rate, what are we locked into? 4C? That's Palm trees in the Arctic territory.

    And it's a 40 year target, which is something that's really easy to kick the can down the road over.

    "Better than nothing" is only literally true. In any meaningful sense, this is incompatible with future human civilization.

    I guess you could say at least they have a target, whereas everyone else gave up or is getting worse. But if your target is a slightly less hot section of hell, that's not good enough.

        4C means Earth has a carrying capacity of under a billion people.

        That means 7 billion people exiting this planet in some manner of horrific violence. It means even most of China will be a wasteland. If they hold this target, and if everyone else follows suit.

        That is an unacceptable target.

        There won't be any fucking point in developing all this industry that they won't be able to fucking use because we'll all be god damned dead.
