When I talk with socdems I like to talk about Denmark and the coffee trade. Denmark makes more money from Ethiopian coffee than Ethiopia does. The market is built to keep the beans cheap until they are roasted, so farmers are paid scraps. Eventually capitalists realized it was more efficient to do roasting in Ethiopia, so they started building facilities in Ethiopia. Every industrial roaster in Ethiopia is Danish-owned.

    • The imperial core is dominated by the US, but it also includes every member of NATO, Australia, and a few others. US imperialism is widespread across South America and Central America, but that's far from everything; it exploits many countries in Africa and Eurasia (primarily in Asia, but also countries like Ukraine, as shown by the 2014 coup) through invasions, coups and sanctions, and the subsequent theft of resources. The most prominent modern-day imperialist countries aside from the US are probably Canada, the UK and France. Denmark is also imperialist, albeit to a lesser extent, because it participates in US imperialism and exploits countries in the Global South -- a country doesn't have to physically overthrow governments to be economically imperialist
