Not a movie, but one of my all time fav shows is Gomorrah (or Gomorra). This one is actually based in Italy, loosely on actual mafia crimes there. It's about a crime syndicate and the internal power struggle to keep it going. It has great character development, arguably good pacing for your wife, and the soundtrack IS SOOOOO GOOD. Highly recommend.
I think there's English dubs, but subs make it better. DM me if you need a link, I know a foreign movie site that still has it up and other sites.
