      Not true. Independence has been a fringe position for decades (partly because of state repression, but for better or worse it is a dead movement). In a referendum this November, Puerto Ricans voted for statehood. Statehood is the will of the Puerto Rican people, regardless of how American leftists feel about that. Support for self-determination means supporting their admission into the union.
