Yeah we've had to stand for the anthem at sporting events going back to at least when I was a little kid (I'm in my late 30s).

We had a national anthem at the start of every school day before the announcements but that pretty much was only elementary school. Didn't have to pledge allegiance to America, as a Canadian it's just implied.

We did too but I went to a religious school, so I just figured of course we did it.

We have a pretty short national anthem and it was usually instrumental so no biggie really

I was pretty sure that had it's roots in the World War's and just continued after because of cold war patriotism, but I could be wrong.

Yes. Every single morning, ritual worship of a piece of stripey fabric. In 4th or 5th grade my teacher sent me to the principal's office because I didn't stand up for the pledge.

I’m German, so this nationalism is so foreign every time I see it or hear about it. Very weird, especially how you are indoctrinated with it already at this young age. I couldn’t imagine that, although we have of course very good, obvious reasons here to be very wary of it.

Good job btw! Did you get some punishment or anything for not obeying?

Yeah it's fucking weird to experience and I imagine it's even weirder to see as an outsider.

Luckily it's apparently illegal for them to punish a student for not doing the pledge because my dad called the superintendent the next day and flipped shit at him lmao. Threatening to sue the school district and everything lol.
