I sawed holes into a cheap two-door cabinet (with a median wall) to create both a "room" for the litter box and a "room" for the cat to walk through (and drop litter from her paws). I set this up 5 years ago and it's just made my life better across the board.

I'm happy to get more into the specifics, but the cat has to cross an antechamber (the first section of the cabinet) before she gets to the section with the litter box itself. The litter she kicks up when burying is kept in by the door of the cabinet, and I put a grooved plastic mate in the antechamber to catch remaining litter on her paws (which is also very easy to clean). She has to cross a carpet to get to the entry, and that picks up everything else. Then you just open the door to clean the box and sweep.

Seriously, it's a win-win-win solution if you can afford it/have space for it, because it 1) hugely reduces litter 2) hides a very unsightly thing 3) cuts down on smell.
