I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or "just asking questions" stuff.

I'm generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of folks' views.

  • Is this a personal project where you just want to have a GUI for a specific system?

Mainly this tbh, in which case the answer for myself would be to limit to preferred platform, so I'll focus mainly on desktops. I've skimmed over web stuff and it gets brambly fast from what I can tell, which also applies for cross-platform in terms of devices as you've reminded me. 😅 Overall it's to simply learn how, as I enjoy good GUIs and think it might be nice to be able to make some.

...Given the presence of Stonehenge, what kept the ancient peoples of Great Britain from making their own pyramids anyway? I'm guessing it's to do with different sociocultural arrangements, but was there any absence of resources that may have also contributed?

  • Yeah, let me try to break it down better:

    1. Browsing All Feeds.
    2. Tap article headline to view/read article, set to use Feeder's built-in reader.
    3. Try to fetch full article, if successful, proceed to read to end.
    4. Tap system back button (or app's back button).
    5. Sometimes it scrolls either up or down in All Feeds to newer/older articles (I think typically down, I've not tracked it carefully enough to say for sure).
    6. Expected behavior: return to All Feeds in-place viewing the article headline I tapped into and read, changed from unread to read (unbolded).

I think I've observed this issue more often after recently syncing All Feeds and trying to scroll through them without closing and reopening the app.

  • I gotcha. Fwiw I kind of agree, even beyond Lemmy I've been a little surprised some of these sites/instances haven't done more to tailor themselves to accommodate more folks or focus on specific demographics.

That's supposed to be one of the big perks of the federation approach, being able to create more distinct communities, but outside of a few, they largely seem to run the software as-is, maybe with some backend adjustments to help reduce the costs of operation or the like.

  • While I don't entirely disagree, I'm a little confused by your description of the front page of lemm.ee, which we're both on. My front page when viewing All here is mostly memes/shitposts/news/technology when set to Active sort, is yours not?

I've admittedly blocked a fair amount and have show NSFW/bot posts disabled, but the communities you mention aren't affected by that.

  • Do you visit here/Reddit for some news alongside other stuff, or more other stuff than news?

If the latter, you can somewhat avoid the rhetoric back & forth by blocking out a lot of the news communities, but then you do run into the general content problem more (especially if you're also blocking memes).
