Most of it sinks to the core in a molten body, actually, since it has an affinity for iron+nickel. The stuff that manages to stay behind tends to not stay chemically combined with rock because it's unreactive. Basically, when a blob of liquid (magma or water) is slowly cooling underground, you get individual crystals of various minerals precipitating, and since gold doesn't tend to combine with other elements, where it exists in quantity it's bound to find it's way into crystals of native metal. If it's a nuggets-type deposit this is what happened, plus maybe a period of weathering+sedimentation or two.

Concentrated ores of other uncommon or rare elements have a similar origin, just obviously with different chemistries. The exact history of each gold deposit will very. Some are probably associated with core-material asteroids that impacted the crust more recently than the molten days of the Earth.

Yeah, I've noticed the lack of insects, and also different plants growing than I remember from when I was a kid, not all too long ago. Every once in a while someone will be talking to me about the weather and how freakish it is, and they'll suddenly get quiet if I use the word "climate" instead of just weather, because they were (and maybe still are?) denialists.

The thing about mammals is that at least some - ourselves included - can migrate. If we have to, we'll set up banana plantations on Antarctica, and there's no known scenario where it gets that bad. Others are not so lucky, though.

This isn’t the only potentially human civilization-ending event I first heard about this past month, and that doesn’t include climate change that we’ve known about for literally decades, which many of the major players involved including the USA and China still don’t seem to care much about even now.

To be fair, every damn headline is framed as civilisation-ending for clicks. Nuclear war is the only one I can think of that's both fairly plausible and could actually end it. Others are at various significant but lower levels of suck, or are just geologically rare.

In particular, climate change is going to suck hard, and I'll miss coral reefs, but some form of civilisation will endure. I know, someone's going to argue with me, and I look forward to making you move around the goalposts on what "end of civilisation" means.

This is actually tame compared to more MAGA republicans, who are straight up saying genocide sounds cool. It's still edgy enough to position her as being different from the Democrats, who care about things like civilian deaths. So, what's happening here is that she's positioning herself as a Starmer-style rebound-to-the-center candidate if the more far-right wing fails. Funny thing, I think you're the first person to ask me that in the past few years. Everyone's eager to join a club and advertise it, but I've had better luck just staying away from labels. Nobody cares what I think, probably not even you, but people do care a bit about facts. You're right, it's far from reality. This proposal is also far from reality, given that it was put forward as a global thing. A 2% tax but then a 100% tax if they're naughty is also far from reality. On the internet, everything is far from reality. In real life I do activism, on the internet I talk and share and hope it makes a difference just by bringing something to someone's attention.

What this means in practice, is that someone will make a billion dollars in Brazil, and then move and spend it all elsewhere, so they can continue becoming richer. This is bad for Brazil, since developing is expensive.
