  • This is such a great comm stalin-heart

I sought an adhd diagnosis earlier this year, and definitely feel like I fall under the audhd umbrella. Similar with my spouse, though I think she’s filled out the “Au” spec tree more, while I’ve focused more towards the “DHD” spec tree. I think we both (definitely me at least) internalized a lot of the “neurodivergence = bad” rhetoric that was prevalent in society during our childhoods. But now we can recognize these aspects as being key parts of ourselves, and embrace them, and extend that same kindness to others. (Except, sometimes, allistic/neurotypical people who I frequently want to shake lol)

I was going to make a more developed point- but I’ve forgotten what it was. Mostly wanted to say that everyone who posts here genuinely makes it such a supportive, educational community- even for lurkers like me.

    spoiler

___ Alcohol is a depressant and messes with your serotonin and causes a laundry list of related issues. By the time you’ve aged, your body is unable to process this literal poison as effectively as when you were younger. When you’re coming up from a hangover it is intensely important to remember that it amplifies thoughts associated what that depressant classification- suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety- and worsens how essentially every one of your major organ systems function.

I used to be a problem drinker-still am given the opportunity-in order to cope with anxiety/de-mask in social situations/de-stress. I’ve heard it described as paying for tonight’s fun with tomorrow’s happiness. For me, it’s been essential to understand why I’m drinking, and in addition to regular water drinking, take regular mental check-ins. When I drink a pint or two with friends it’s usually as a social lubricant. When I stay at the bar after for another 8 by myself-there’s usually something else going on.

Frankly it’s literal self-harm. It’s only legal because capitalists use it to exploit the proletariat to great effect.

That said too, 4 pints in a night now give me the equivalent hangover that a case would- aka the enshittification of my liver- and yes it will happen to young folks too- faster than you think. I’ve heard 100% agave tequila doesn’t have the same depressant effect. Idk if it’s true, but if I wanna get blasted that’s usually my drink of choice.

I try to stick to thc edibles now when I want a buzz- in a legal state so unfortunately isn’t the case for everyone.

Final moralizing point- take care of yourself, friend. Treat yourself like you would a dear friend. Drink water, talk about what’s bothering you, and pace yourself. We live in a hell world, and can only persist together. The capitalists want you to drink yourself to death-don’t give them that pleasure.

  • What interested you in this book club? Are you neurodiverse? Do you know someone who is? I finally pursued an adhd diagnosis after 30+ years of coping and depression after being raised by parents too anxious about the stigma of neurodivergence to pursue a diagnosis (just put me in advanced classes instead). My partner and I are both shades of partly diagnosed spicy, adhd and major depression are mine and she has a “highly sensitive introvert personality” with anxiety. We’ve been tugging at threads in our tangled brains to try and figure out what’s up. We’re both fairly successful in our fields through masking, coping, and misery, and want to be advocates such that no one else needs to feel anything besides pride and an embrace of their neurodiversity. Hoping the perspectives of this book will be transformative in the way that Trans Liberation was the first time I read it. A better future is coming for all of us.

What stood out to you about the introduction? Any choice quotes? Anything you relate to? Will download tonight and dive in and check back in to the thread.

Ps this com has already done wonders for my understanding of neurodiversity, embrace of my own and that of others, and you’re all wonderful people who deserve nothing but the best from life

I love that! I actually haven’t read that one- but SER press is always good. Thanks! I’ve been trying to experiment with small scale prairie restoration at my home- I have one garden going on 2 years old, and one going on one. Going to try interplanting with edibles and see how they compare with my raised bed stuff. I’ve been giving out seed and instructions with how to establish it in a box on the sidewalk. I wish there was a way to non-intrusively have people submit location/condition info, because I feel like it’d be cool to map/develop an urban/suburban ecological corridor

You might find these helpful! Prairie Moon and a handful of other nurseries have great guidance documents on plants, how to design with them, and their needs. My understanding from this guidance is that butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) requires 30 days of cold stratification prior to germination. You can mimic this by putting the seeds in a bag of sand in your fridge for 30 days prior to planting, or what works for me is to wait until the first snowfall and spread the seeds. This way they get stratification, they’re less prone to birds picking them off, and in the spring they have good contact with the soil and they get a good source of water.

Depending on your area though, it is often easier to start with plant “plugs” and supplement with seeds.

  • I like these buildings too because they provide an extremely easy opportunity to launch into an homage on the power of labor for anyone within earshot. Especially since they usually house capitalist institutions in a way that makes an excellent example of “this was built by labor, but look who put their name on top in neon”

  • I was helping design a portion of a bus rapid transit system, and when we were showing some local officials a model of the station, one mentioned that they didn’t want heaters in the bus stops so that they wouldn’t attract homeless people looking for a place to sleep. Mind this is in the Midwest so the heaters are a winter necessity. Just the absolute cruelty was astounding. Though tbf pretty par for that municipality. I quit that job before the project finished- pretty sure they put the heaters though- so fuck that person.
