  • capitulating to liberals in this way is kinda like the old quote about nonviolence, it only works if your enemy has a conscience, and most liberals have none.

But yeah, I don't think it was horrible or malicious, just the timing made for a bad look. carcosa said as much, and I'm satisfied with that acknowledgement, I wish they would stay.

I think you're overthinking it. The problem attempting to be solved by messaging the other admins was not "dunking" it was their drama communities doing harassment campaigns (against vegantheoryclub most notably), and trying to bait other instances into doing the right thing and shutting down those harassment engines

The issue with that message (IMO) was mainly that it happened before the public announcement here, and that it conceded our dunking as shitty/harassing and analagous to those drama comms on other instances, which it isn't. I guess the idea was that the lib instance admins would see that capitulation and apply the same critical eye to themselves, but obv that didn't work given the lack of response from them

The context switching/tone difference between addressing users here, vs addressing other admins there, is to be expected and shouldn't be held against carcosa

  • Struck me as a bit tone deaf/assumed familiarity

    yeah fair

Also that jt was only the recently appointed admin coming in to comment with none of the others responsible for the decision just highlighted their absence.

I think a lot of this has just been messy because of timezones tbh. the other admin accounts are pretty much inactive, and carcosa can't be online 24/7

queer people also aren't immune to misogyny brainworms unfortunately. I had some qualms about some details of that thread (if I'm thinking of the same one), but to say the mods are The Problem then as now...

I guess I'm just not sure i'm totally on board with the "shitty mod clique" thesis you're operating on. I think there are definitely some people operating more on vibes and their personal comfort, which sometimes results in bad analysis, but on the other hand, we want all sorts of marginalized people to be comfortable here, so its not like you can completely ignore those factors either.

I don't know the rest from a bar of soap let alone the others who were yucking it up like old pals in the 1.2k comment prior thread. L for public relations and makes the site management even more opaque imo

yeah, this is an unfortunate (but potentially unavoidable?) side effect of how we're doing admin anonymity, only very outspoken admins become familiar to the community, even if the rest have been here the whole time, which I believe most have, none of us feel like we know them.

the gags in the old thread I thought were mostly funny/fine but the overall point of "I don't know these people" stands

since the other thread is locked I'll post what I wanted to say in reply to @CARCOSA@hexbear.net about the ruse with the other lemmy admins here:

Damn lol, guess I'm not sure how that could realistically have worked with how much the other lemmy libs hate us, but I do get the idea, yeah. I appreciate the transparency after the fact at least. I don't envy the position of having to manage this place, because certain shitty tendencies and bigotry have ofc really required the iron fist to stamp out, like transphobia, but for other changes like this, the "alright its decided for you, here's what we're doing" approach kinda just feels shitty and unnecessary as a user.

But it would of course be a massive shitshow to attempt to decide something like this fully democratically, publicly, even if there were a majority of users behind it. I'd like to think we've grown past the need to have unpopular but necessary site changes pushed through by a vanguard of mods/admins, but idk if that's true or not tbqh.

for whatever it's worth, I'm much more interested in keeping a place for dunking here, and like, not repeating this sort of mess, than I am in seeing you step down, besides this I think you've done a very good job, and I hope I didn't ruin your day stalin-heart

I admit I'm a bit overinvested in slop, but dunking is also a huge part of site culture and somewhat important (insofar as anything on here is, which isn't that much)

  • the way this has been handled is deffo a moment, projecting vague criticisms of a comm that by its very nature needs to be more tightly moderated than other comms as cishet and white and then deleting it without community feedback is pretty unserious and kinda sucks to hear for the people who regularly contributed and weren't white or cishet, and will do nothing but bring those types of posts to other comms, whereas before i could just block the dunk tank and move on with my week if i wasn't feeling it that particular day

exactly. also this weirds me out

  • The way this was messaged really sucks, and I don't think I can really agree with the reasoning either. I guess creating spaces that involve being mean can turn toxic sometimes, but so can anything, that's why we moderate.

What's worse, the way it was communicated on the backend to other instance's admins completely mismatches the reasoning given here. And they were given advance notice well ahead of the announcement here?

    Show

Why play PR games with people that hate us regardless? I thought we were on the same page about the lemmitors.

How many of y'all actually venture out of Local?

I certainly don't with any regularity lol

the majority of our interaction with other instances seems to be them wandering in here and getting mad at our takes.
