i'm more thinking the people behind this need to sit down, write up a coherent argument, post it, and invite the community to decide if there is any substance to it or not. then we decide how to proceed.
Honestly they did that already. They wrote down their statement, and here we are.
I am happy to see this account return. Thank you for your contributions to these discussions the past few days
I am glad someone else stated this. The first couple months of Hexbear I distinctly remember choosing to say nothing because it was very clear that at certain points that reasonable dissent was Not Allowed. It's stupid that a forum can at the same instant be both simultaneously some of the highest stakes emotionally, while also the stakes are so low because it's a fucking WEBSITE. At that moment the stakes were very high for me emotionally so I wanted to stay around and not feel hurt by being banned or my comments deleted, so I would choose to log out or shut the fuck up.
That time passed and the last couple of years it has not felt like that. This week, that old feeling came back.
I agree with your sentiment but honestly I have low expectations for an actual cogent, meaningful, and well thought out argument being actually formed as to why low effort posting is bad and should be curtailed.
If the most focused push to change the culture has been...... <vaguely points at the smoke and rubble> .... this, I don't think there's some set of alternative discussions that would have convinced anyone that were being saved for later. Because if that was the case why didn't they use those instead of whatever the hell all this was?
Like sorry sometimes you only get one shot at convincing someone to your point of view and this was the attempt. It's over.
I fucking hated the discord that got formed after /r/chapotraphouse got banned.
Partially because Discord sucks ( ) but also there was some inscrutable drama constantly happening and I just didn't have the time or patience to even try to figure out up from down, and then saw a mention that they built a discussion site so gave it a try.
I don't know why I'm still here, this last couple of days of drama at a site I look at daily has me wondering why the fuck I do anything at all. So fucking stupid to put any energy or emotions into a fucking website, and let it become this important to me
You know, honestly I had been hoping that a couple days of nothing being done would be in order. Where the old comms remained locked, and everyone just sat in their corners for a bit and maybe we just all let things pause for a while.
I am incredibly disappointed to see some users that I saw make excellent points like REgon, usa_suxxx, among many others get temp bans.
I also see that many bans are being handed out with the same comment copied and pasted, multiple times to many different people.
I understand that moderating can be a slog and there's so MUCH SHIT that has to be shoveled, but I can't shake the feeling that it is being done with a little bit of glee. That each ban with the same pithy one liner just gives you a little burst of dopamine, each time that you do it.
Which is sad. Truly.
I never really appreciated your moderating style TC69, because you seemed to just take it as a given that everything had to be your way or the highway, and I'm disappointed to see you return.
), my usual approach to struggle sessions is to just close Hexbear for a few days and hope things sort themselves out,
I'm kind of sick of doing this though and I've been here basically from the start
I went through a phase where I dove deep on the internals of the CLR runtime for C# and there's a great book on the subject. Might need to find an equivalent for the JVM.
I know the garbage collection part of the runtime has had lots and lots and lots of research and papers and study
God at this rate Israel's The Villages is going to take forever to build
Okay but this whole thing about "We want to do a top down change of the site culture" was being smuggled underneath the issue of the unfortunate name of the community. It was never explicitly stated as such, it took all of us picking through the subtext of the statement, and then after confronting the moderating team, they came out with a statement that just lashes out, calls everyone white and cis, and goes to war against the community for no good reason
and calling it like it is, gossip, should prove to be not only a method of finding out problematic users,
This is needlessly paranoid.
This is deeply unserious. Viva has spent a lot of effort responding and to reply like this is just not right
Wow. Honestly the statement from the mods that favor this change just seems to be against the culture of the site.
Which, I get it, being a moderator sucks and you're getting the worst of the site rather than the best. Still though, this is something else.
I don't care for fake news or bad posting so I blocked them.
Like, the system works. I don't understand why there is this big rule change to try and police community behavior
I think there's a lot of idiotic armchair bureaucrats in the Pentagon that pretend that Kent State never happened.
Like the military has absolutely fired on civilians in the past. Hell they enjoy it.
These blue blood armchair generals don't know their own troops.
It just kills me. The United States could have climbed down from the attempt at global hegemony, and been part of the multipolar world. All we had to do was give up just a little bit of control and we'd preserve the majority of our influence.
Instead, the stupid fucks are going to blow all of it and leave us as a pariah state
That's who this is?!? I kept trying to remember why this name kept ringing a bell
Can people just take a fucking week off and STOP MESSING WITH THE SITE PLEASE
Like why do we need to have this vote right at this moment? Can we push this off for a bit?
What the fuck.
I have badposting and fakenews blocked but like can we just not do this right now. I don't want to have another big fight.
