A few years ago I went to Harper's Ferry with my mom. She saw this picture of John Brown and said "it's hard to believe someone like him was the good guy...he looks like an Islamic terrorist"

I had to remind her that "Yea, he was a religious extremist that attacked a military base, his side won so we call him a freedom fighter"

She looked like her brain looked like it reset itself and then she mumbled something about fighting for Good and how that's different

  • I mentioned it above but dreamingspanish.com is so good for this. Start at your level, watch about 100 hours, then try the next level up. It takes time but it's noticable when you start getting bored of the slow levels and then jump up to videos you couldn't understand previously. I'm at their advanced level now and trying to jump to native tv shows. I think I still need some time with dreaming, but I can definitely understand more tv/radio than I could 6 months ago.

  • I've been learning Spanish lately so I've been listening to the Mexican radio station a lot in my Midwest city. Other than a few car dealerships and a few immigration lawyers, the only ads are for things that don't cost money, usually paid for as public service announcements. Go to a park, go to the free salsa night in the city center, get vaccinated (still), etc. All of them end with a disclaimer "paid for by X public service fund."

It's something I hadn't really noticed until I read that line in your post. I wonder what the main reasons are? Do the advertisers just ignore that population because it doesn't fit into their market? Do the capitalists know they can't push these cultural norms to that population? Does the minority population just get forgotten about? Are the public service groups recording funding specifically for outreach to this population and so they buy up all the ad space?
