That's a great idea, I'd absolutely love it myself. Something like adding a flake input and it giving you an overlay with reproducible packages for a lot of games, I suppose. Not sure about feasibility but it sure sounds enticing!

I've been meaning to experiment with mobile NixOS myself but it's all but impossible to get my hands on a supported device around here. Then again, maybe fumbling around and trying to get it to work at all on an old phone might be fun 🤔

I've always struggled with actually retaining knowledge on how to use the myriad tools you'd usually need to extract/parse data (awk, sed and friends) and this was a game changer. I don't quite daily drive it just yet but when I do need it, it's vastly more ergonomic.

I don't have much experience with similar tools but that looks quite interesting, thanks for sharing!

Lutris integrates with itch.io these days, I haven't used it extensively but it seems robust enough. It should also support your local DRM free games and whatnot.

Yup, it's great! I know btrfs not supporting case folding can be an issue with some games but I personally haven't encountered any so it works for me. Can always come up with a spare ext4 partition with it on if I absolutely need it at some point, I guess.

I've used btrfs for gaming and deduping in particular helps a lot with steam prefixes since it's a lot of individual folders with similar files. I don't have hard data but the before and after comparison I've made after getting my deck from ext4 to btrfs left me more than satisfied. I'd guess compression doesn't hurt either, although again I don't have actual numbers.

Now that's quite an interesting NixOS setup, I'm especially intrigued by the tmpfs root portion. The link you provided was a great read, and I'll keep this and honestly most of what you've described in mind for when I mess with NixOS again.

As someone from a developing country, I'm painfully aware of how most big publishers choose to ignore recommended prices and just go with a straight USD conversion most of the time so I can only hope this doesn't screw them even further.

I really wish it was viable for Valve to enforce a ceiling on suggested prices or something along those lines, it's about the only way I see that ever changing. Well, that, or everyone just becoming a full-time sailor, I suppose!

Side note, I can't help but hope they give DLDSR the same treatment someday. I guess for that to happen actual DSR would have to be in first though and that doesn't sound too likely.

In my experience it works perfectly fine as long as you perform the steps outlined here, as per Valve's official recommendation. The section about preventing read errors is particularly important, but the whole thing is worth a read.

I'm not the pirate I once was when it comes to gaming but there's always EGS exclusives, games whose lack of regional pricing make them impossible to reasonably buy here, things like that. I'm a patient gamer for the most part so most of the time I can just get it a few years down the line but sometimes even that doesn't cut it. I avoid doing it to indie developers, but those are usually the few that follow Steam's recommended pricing guidelines so they tend to be fine anyway.
I pirate unbelievable amounts of tv and movies on a regular basis though through the *arr apps and whatnot, mostly because I refuse to pay for a dozen different streaming services with their rotating content and usually terrible apps. I self host whatever I can to avoid relying on the whims of a few corporations, and the one surviving service so far is Spotify.

Thanks for sharing, sounds like a really well executed project! I've been meaning to come up with one of those of my own to understand the whole thing better so I'll definitely take a look.
