  • This says nothing about Saudi Arabia deliberately ending the deal or wanting to opt-out, as OP's article implies. At best, they're saying the deal reached some natural expiration date. There have been no public comments either way to suggest that the deal has expired, anything out of the ordinary has happened or that it will not be renewed if this is the case.

More importantly, this is an opinion piece on the stock tip section of a website that is notably not a news agency. If this were true, it would represent a massive Geo-political shift and would have been widely reported by now.

  • I apologise for these old comments and withdraw them unreservedly and the upset that they have caused.

A Reform UK spokesman initially said: "Through offence archaeology the BBC has found that Mr Gribbin has made a series of comments about a number of subjects.

They keep making this sound like something that happened a long time ago but he wrote all this stuff in 2022! Next they'll tell us he was a younger man and it was actually socially acceptable in those days to be neutral on Hitler.

No. I had no idea about this instance's reputation when I joined Lemmy but it's nothing like the other instance you mentioned.

It gets very tiring trying to have a conversation with contrarians who think everything Western is bad and anything Chinese/USSR is good. Or worse, that their highly suspicious news sources (some random blog usually) are telling you the real truth, while using any mainstream news media source makes you a deluded Lib

  • A million people were temporarily detained

Oh okay, I guess it's fine then...

Do you even hear yourself? A million people put into camps unlawfully as collective punishment, and you're siding with that government over the reports of the people who were imprisoned?

Birth rates are up now, because they halved between 2017-19 when the Chinese government started targeting Uyghurs.

I'm sure you can see people practicing their religion in public. You can still see First Nations people in Canada wearing their traditional garb, selling their cultural artifacts etc. But that doesn't mean that the Canada didn't commit cultural genocide against them with the Residential Schools. The parallels are actually striking in both cases: China isn't trying to kill all 15 million of these people just as the Canadian government didn't try to kill all their Indigenous people. They just kidnapped a subset of them and tried to brainwash and torture them. The details differ (children vs adults), but in both cases the intent to destroy a people and their culture is there and that's what makes these crimes genocidal.
