  • My guess at the stance is I'd imagine it's that switching away from snaps is switching away from Ubuntu's support and security monitoring and updates to some less known/reliable/diligent third party?

Popey (Alan Pope) used to work for Canonical / Ubuntu, so he's presumably not inclined to jump on the bandwagon of Canonical/Ubuntu/snap hate since he knows a lot of Canonical and Ubuntu people and their motivations and work. Not that there aren't good reasons to criticize snap or other Canonical decisions, but it's also plain that a lot of people just join a hate bandwagon and don't even know what about it they object to. There is masses of wrong-headed criticism of Canonical out there e.g. I've frequently seen people criticize creating Upstart, saying Canonical should have used systemd, or bzr vs git! Presumably these people were annoyed at Canonical for not inventing a time machine.

  • Yeah, big poncho fan. It can be made out of fully waterproof material that's cheap and durable but you still have great airflow. It's especially useful when it's not cold and wearing a rain suit would be a sweaty proposition.

Of course they only fully work if you have full length fenders with a good mudflap.

I had a pretty good waxed cotton one that needs to be re-treated and I haven't got to grips with that yet. Generally I have had some frustration finding good ones so would welcome recommendations. I picked up one from Cleverhood that is a bit meh - poor hand attachments, pointlessly breathable material that lets moisture through in heavy rain.

I sometimes use gaiters with it, but that still means damp knees. I would like to have some special gaiters for the purpose that covered the shoe and knee. They could be partially open at the rear for ventilation. I periodically contemplate trying to make some.

  • I was absolutely joking, but in hindsight I can see that's not clear.

There are a number of words that are being declared in some quarters to be so offensive they may not even be uttered, like "removed" which I have been chastised for even uttering in quotation, and informed I must call "the f-slur".

My take on this is it is giving power to these words they would not otherwise have and is deeply regressive. We should follow the example of "queer", which used to be used in highly offensive ways but in recent years has been adopted and claimed by the queer community and has been stripped of much of its power.

I was trying to poke fun at the idiot who is trying to give "slave" new power to offend, but obviously I didn't do it well.

  • Ubuntu Mono since it was in beta and I heard the designer from Dalton Maag — the typeface design studio commissioned to design it — give a talk about how excited he was to be able to create a comprehensive, carefully thought out, and truly free/libre font.

I've never seen another one that I prefer the look of, and now it's imprinted in my brain. People love to crap on Shuttleworth / Canonical / Ubuntu, but there are a lot of great things they've contributed over the years.
