Concave shaped shields are designed for use in heavy shieldwall type fighting. Think the greek bowl and the roman trunk shaped ones. The flat shields used in northern europe were made for closing in and were ment to be disposable and not really ment for shieldwall smashing like in the movies.

If I remember correctly a buckler is a small shield that is strapped to your forearm so your shield arm is free to hold something. A Targe is a small shield used by scots and the irish.
