Melatonin is effective and gentle and makes me dream intensely. You can also be sure to buy the lowest dose available, since you can't really absorb more than a few mg at a time.
idk if it's the same for everyone, but whenever I take Melatonin I have a rather small ~ 10-15min window where i feel it kicking in and absolutely must do my best to sleep. If I don't stop reading/watching/listening or replaying dumb thoughts in my head when it kicks in, it's not like regular sleeping pills in that it "knocks you out." I really have to just distract my mind just enough to enter into a sleep state. This might seem obvious for some people but it took me awhile to really figure out how to effectively use it.
Oh yeah, definitely. My window is a little wider, but I have to put myself in sleep conditions for it to ease me into falling off, too. I usually put on a mildly interesting speedrun or let's play or something, but that's just because I associate someone talking quietly with it being ok to sleep.
