like, im not trying to put words in your mouth,

but 'vocal fry' just comes off as misogyny to me.

in the US its a super gendered way of speaking, and looked down on, so I guess I'm just trying to figure out what relationship you're trying to draw here.

is it a class thing? a 'certain type of person' thing?

It's a class thing, I don't think it's actually a natural dialect or accent, just like a weird trendy thing that bougie Californians do. I think it started because of the Kardashians? Or maybe it has something to do with how no one likes the way their voice sounds and if you're constantly posting to social media, doing a vocal fry can make it sound less bad to yourself.

It's just women who found out that people take them more seriously if they speak with a lower pitch. Vocal fry is what happens when you try to go below your lowest pitch. Men do it too, just check out this guy

Vocal fry has been around way before social media. The Valley girl accent was full of vocal fry.

I have literally never heard any woman speak like that except white american women.

Right... that’s the point? Like you’re picking on a specific type of person to make a disparaging comment about a person you don’t want?

Like in its extreme, to me it’s like looking at a picture of an Indian man and being like “this picture smells like curry”. If you don’t like the person just say you don’t like them...

Upper middle class white women are truly the most oppressed people in the world.

I think it's pretty easy to both acknowledge that upper class white women weaponise their gender, but that is precisely because misogyny is still a massive issue.

we can just call her names without resorting to disparaging an entire gender, or subset of gender...

To be completely honest I don't really give a shit about offending rich white women based on how they talk.

Your comment kinda has a "you can totally be racist to white people" vibe.

that's the point though. that accent isnt just rich white women. an accent doesn't precisely constrain itself to a certain income bracket or man-made border.

so why make fun of an accent when you just want to call her a rich white lady? just do that.

that accent isnt just rich white women.

I dunno seems to me like it kind of is, or at the very least people pretending to talk like the rich. If there's actual working class people talking like that unironically then fine, you're right, but honestly I don't see it.

you could literally talk to a group of random teenage girls or gay men and you'd hear it.

I know plenty of women academics, working class people, etc who have spoken like that.

but like i said, it's a predominantly feminine-coded way of speaking, so if you're insulting the accent, you're more or less specifically targeting women.

just say you hate Sinema and that she sucks and that's fine.

Is it? Maybe I never thought of it that way because my own voice fries like crazy unless I consciously avoid it
